Compare the final price per gallon
The station advertising the largest cashback amount is not necessarily the cheapest. Begin with the posted price for the fuel grade and payment method you use. Subtract only discounts and rewards that apply to your actual transaction.
A cash price and a credit price can differ, and an app’s displayed price may not match the pump when you arrive. Check the price before authorizing the purchase. Your comparison should use the amount you will actually be charged.
How a local fuel offer fits in
Upside lets users claim offers at participating locations before buying. Its gas-rewards guidance says loyalty discounts can affect the cashback amount and that a purchase already processed by an affiliate cashback program such as Checkout 51 or GasBuddy will not also earn Upside cashback.
The practical lesson is to check the exact station and offer rather than adding every advertised fuel benefit together. Read the purchase deadline, supported payment method, fuel requirements, and proof-of-purchase instructions shown in the app.
Do the pump-price calculation
Illustration: Station A charges $3.60 per gallon and has a hypothetical eligible 15-cent rebate. Its effective price is $3.45. Station B charges $3.40 with no rebate. Buying 12 gallons costs an effective $41.40 at A versus $40.80 at B, so B is cheaper by 60 cents.
If A also advertises a loyalty discount, verify whether the rebate changes after that discount before recalculating. Do not assume a 10-cent loyalty discount and 15-cent app offer automatically produce a combined 25-cent benefit.
Use a safe, simple fill-up routine
- Check a small number of stations along your existing route.
- Confirm the offer applies to the exact location and fuel you need.
- Claim or activate before purchase when required.
- Pay using the eligible method and keep the full receipt.
- Complete the supported verification step and check the credited amount.
Handle the app while safely parked. A reward is not worth distracting yourself while driving or making a hurried decision at the pump.
Include the detour cost
A faraway station can erase the benefit through additional fuel and time. As a planning exercise, compare the expected dollars saved on your actual fill-up with the cost of the extra trip. Small per-gallon differences create small total savings on a partial tank.
Do not buy a higher fuel grade solely because it appears in a promotion. Follow your vehicle’s requirements and compare equivalent fuel. Likewise, do not add convenience-store purchases unless they were already part of your plan.
Review the outcome
Record gallons, actual pump price, and the final approved reward. This helps reveal whether a location is consistently competitive or only looks attractive in the app. Keep any separate payment-card reward in its own line so you do not count it twice.
For the next fill-up, repeat the comparison instead of assuming yesterday’s best station is always best. Prices and offers change, while the method for evaluating them stays useful.
